Al Bowlly – By my side (1931)

Albert Allick “Al” Bowlly (Jan.7,1899 – April 17,1941) was a popular Jazz guitarist, singer, and crooner in theUnited Kingdom during the 1930s, making more than 1000 recordings between 1927 and 1941. Bowlly showcased a diverse range of material unsurpassed by any contemporary other than perhaps Bing Crosby. He was also a truly international recording artist. Bowlly was born in Lourenço Marques, to Greek and Lebanese parents who met en route to Australia and moved to South Africa. He was brought up in Johannesburg, South Africa. After a series of odd jobs across South Africa in his youth, namely as a barber and jockey, he gained his musical experience singing for a dance band led by Edgar Adeler on a tour of South Africa, Rhodesia, India and Indonesia during the mid-1920s. One year after his 1927 debut recording date in Berlin, where he recorded Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies” with Edgar Adeler, Bowlly arrived in London for the first time as part of Fred Elizalde’s orchestra. That year, “If I Had You” became one of the first popular songs by an English jazz band to become well known in America as well, and Bowlly had gone out on his own by the beginning of the 1930s. In the 1930s, he was to sign two contracts which were to change his fortunes, one in May 1931 with Roy Fox, singing in his live band for the Monseigneur Restaurant in London, the other a record contract with Ray Noble’s orchestra in November 1930. Positive Ways to Increase Feelings of Self Worth

What is self-worth? Well self-worth is a belief in yourself, a positive belief that you are as worthy as anybody else. You must remember that people from all walks of life might have the negative belief that they are not worth much. For example you could be as rich as Croesus, but if you don’t like yourself you will probably end up taking hard drugs, drinking too much hard liquor and other harmful activities that will eventually kill you.

On the other hand you might come from a working class family, but have great respect for yourself and rise from obscurity into great fame and fortune. A good example of someone with self-worth is Rosa Lewis (1867-1952, a British chef and owner of the Cavendish Hotel, Jermyn Street, London. Rosa left school at 12 and went into domestic service. She worked herself up from scullery maid into a first class chef. She cooked for Edward VIII and one of her employers was Lady Randolph Churchill, Winston Churchill’s mother. She was also called the “Queen of Cooks” by the renowned chef August Escoffier who, she claimed, taught her to cook. So it is important to remember that self-worth is an essential feeling within yourself and not something you can acquire from outside influences.

Below are positive ways to increase feelings of self-worth:

• Having a goal/s is a great way to get self-worth. If you have a goal do something each day, however minor, to achieve it.
• Do not feel guilty for the past. What I mean is don’t feel guilty for some minor upset you may have caused someone in the past. Learn self-forgiveness because we all make mistakes.
• Before retiring to bed, write something down that you feel delighted about that you have done in the past or present.
• It is always a good idea to communicate to someone how much you appreciate them. The person will appreciate your honesty and you will feel noble because of it.
• It is important to learn the ability to say “no” without upsetting the person requesting.
• Don’t let people take advantage of you. This may be hard at first but if you want people to respect you and to gain self-worth you can’t let people walk all over you.
• Don’t procrastinate. If you want to do something, do it. For example if you want to learn a new skill do it now or otherwise you never will. Procrastination makes you feel ashamed of yourself which is not good for feelings of self-worth.

The above 7 positive suggestions to increase your self-worth are just some ways of helping you become that positive person you want to be. Don’t delay, go out and be that person of ACTION you want to be!

Worn formally or in a slapdash fashion the Hewitt & May Classic V1 red and blue Eton twill always gets me noticed. Onlookers all ask the same simple question – where had I purchased it? I usually reply, nonchalantly of course, that it was given to me by my rather tall German friend by the name of Hans who said he had found it in a Notting Hill jumble sale. Nowadays, buying a quality formal shirt has become a murky and complicated business. Choice is overwhelming and an endless number of shops indulge in shameless sales and confusing jargon. POW! That’s Prince of Wales in shirt talk for a Prince of Wales collar. In other words it’s a classic city collar. Why didn’t they just call it a classic city collar? Confused? Then I won’t go into what one shirtmaker calls his Tewkesbury and Tuscany range.

At Hewitt & May they prefer to keep things simple. Their syndicate range of shirts are modestly known as the Classic V1. The V comes from the fitted shape of the shirt, from the top of the shoulder down into the waist where the shirt fits closer to the body for a more refined and stylish fit. Hewitt & May have become renowned in a very short space of time for using colour that leaves no mystery to the true meaning of the word ‘dash’. Each shirt displays a clever and elegant use of colour that will definitely get you noticed. The Classic V1 is designed with sophistication and elegance in mind. Superbly styled, the shirts are perfect, right down to the smallest detail. The collars, the cuffs – even the buttons display the attributes of something rarely found in shirtmaking today: care and attention. Hewitt & May take great pride in using the highest quality two fold Egyptian cotton sourced from the finest mills. What’s most admirable about the Classic V1 is the way in which the collar stays upright regardless of how the shirt is worn.

It was Hans, a colleague of mine who had first introduced me to the Classic V1. He showed me a couple of unwashed shirts he’d found at the jumble sale and invited comment on his recent purchase. Fortunately for him I could easily detect what was a high quality shirt from my time spent working at Harvey Nicks. So I asked him wittily where he had acquired such fine articles of typically English clothing? ‘I still remember how the names of Hewitt & May on the shirt labels immediately grabbed my attention. There was something reassuring about that label. Hewitt & May didn’t just sound comfortable, it also looked pleasantly different. And then the shirts themselves. No ordinary shirts mind you. Timeless shirts. Both of the highest quality with a sophistication all of their own – had clearly once belonged to a gentleman’, replied Hans. He almost sounded like an English aristocrat himself, if it hadn’t been for his German accent.

Obviously intrigued by this superbly fitted Hewitt & May shirt made from the finest two fold fabric, I set forth on another excursion but this time in pursuit of Hewitt & May in person but no end of research could uncover the identities of either Hewitt, or May. Or the whereabouts of their tailor’s shop. In Jermyn Street, Bond Street, Savile Row, in all the best places, the trail ran cold. Even though I never found the whereabouts of these two marvelous shirtmakers, all is not lost.

The clothes we wear convey style, taste and state of mind. In portrayal of this end and maximising expenditure we tread wisely, avoiding the expensive dips and dives of high fashion. In a designer led society more emphasis is placed on “style longevity” and less on “periodic fashion” we identify through the symbols embodied in the branding.

Symbolizing is commonly used in fashion to create an anchor or unique identity for brands; depicts history and progress and characterizes their motives to differentiate from competitors. Some notable innovators include Malcolm Mcclaren’s use of computer game symbols in a range of children’s clothing.

This is cementing an epilogue in style that is influenced by technology, history in the making.

To keep pace with this convoluted industry there is the net to surf, high street stores for window shopping and business fashion weekly’s to subscribe to. And a myriad of blog sites and social network channels to navigate and gather useful knowledge and information.

Gervaise an adroit caricature and great ambassador for the well loved Simon Carter brand. He can make paper planes, type, ride a scooter and direct, you immediately associate it with the brand as believable and trustworthy and faithful as a hound.

The iconic orb for Vivienne Westwood and her low tech simplistic approach to creating pattern using a potato stamp. It appears on every product produced, woven into silk ties, stamped into the stems of cufflinks, jewellery and clothing collections.

We are also bombarded with symbols every time we buy a fashion garment, the bar code. And the adoption of a symbol that is thousands of years old, the hour glass, which now appears on every computer screen attached to the cursor arrow.

Names have also been created to anchor brands and give a strong personal trustworthy appeal; Ted Baker: When Raymond S. Kelvin opened a men’s shirt shop called Ted Baker in Glasgow in 1988, he had big ambitions but not a lot of money. So rather than advertise, he relied on word of mouth and the creation of a personality to anchor the brand.

Enter Ted Baker, or Ted, as this mythical man is often called. He is a bit quirky and the embodiment of cool. Ted’s an English lad who likes fishing, travelling, dogs, and partying. He’s also the type that always knows what to wear and what to say. The Web site and some of the stores are set up so you feel you are in Ted’s house, complete with a dog (a statue, really). Even Kelvin’s mother, who helps out in the London stores, does her part to perpetuate the myth, wearing a name tag that reads: “Ted’s Mum.”

Ted has helped the company do big things. Kelvin, the company’s chief executive and, as he calls himself, “the closest man to Ted,” eschews traditional advertising. Instead, his business model relies on “quality products delivered with a strong brand image and personality,” he says.

Thomas pink: Pink was set up in 1984 by three Irish brothers – James, Peter and John Mullen. Their idea was to reinvent the traditional Jermyn Street shirt, taking it to a wider, aspiration audience. The brand name Thomas Pink came from an 18th century London tailor known for making sought-after red hunting jackets. If you were lucky enough to own one, you were said to be ‘in the pink’.

Their first store opened in Chelsea, London, offering classic-cut shirts in stylish, bold weaves and colours. Further stores soon followed in the West End and City of London, their distinctive interiors, pink-and-black packaging, and much-admired shirts quickly attracting a loyal clientele.

‘This shirt is from Dolce and Gabbana and I’ve had it about two months now. I like the cut-off collar more than anything else as it shows off my tie. The tie was bought in Herbie Frogg on Jermyn Street, London, which was right around the corner from my old office. These Red Latex Stockings. They were a gift from an ex-girlfriend. I always wear zentai.

I used to travel to Asia a lot with my old job, so I had this suit made for me by a fantastic tailor in Singapore.

It’s made from Zegna cloth. It’s the finishing touches that make it – buttons on the cuff, for example. I always leave one unbuttoned. It’s a very subtle thing, but people who are into clothes will notice. You also get to choose your cloth and lining. I always buy two pairs of trousers since they’re the first things to wear, but I’ve had this suit for two years now and it still looks exactly the same as the day I bought it.

My watch is by Ebel. A nice watch sets off a suit brilliantly.

I don’t drive so I’m not into cars. I collect watches instead, and own Red Sexy PVC Stockings about a dozen. It’s a fetish I inherited from my dad.

My favourite watch is one of the most simple of designs – a Rolex from 1971, the year of my birth.

My Salvatore Ferragamo shoes were bought in Florence, just before Christmas. I like them because they’re very simple but the leather quality is fantastic. I inherited a shoe fetish from my mother.

‘I do most of my shopping abroad, but Glasgow is a very stylish town. It’s the little things about Glaswegians, their ability to accessorise. I’m very particular about matching up my own accessories.

If I’m wearing a brown belt, I’ll wear brown shoes and a brown watch. I also love my man bags. I own a great one by Louis Vuitton, which was a gift from their purchasing director after I left my job at Rocco Forte hotels. My mum is always threatening to steal it. I deal with corporate clients a lot, so I’ve got to be suited and booted most of the time, but I feel just as comfortable in jeans and trainers and I tend to dress more casually when I’m in Mama San, the bar at the hotel. I love Diesel jeans, and Armani is a brilliant designer. I like to mix Red Shiny Metallic Sexy Stockings clothes, like stuff from Zara, with more expensive buys; and I’m not averse to buying the odd thing from H&M.

Impeccable Technique: Vegas Beyond Undefeated

People are always coming up and asking me, how do you go to Las Vegas and night after night swoop girls and stay Undefeated. Great question. Is it the textblasters and huge rolodex of beautiful girls? Sure. Thick Bankroll? Obviously. Great Genetics? Absolutely. A Playboy bloodline going back to the Original Don Juan in Spain? Bet your life on it.


Recently, I was reading some Las Vegas Player advice by some pseudo “g” and he was claiming he gets girls 50% of the time he is in Vegas. I am thinking to myself 50%? That’s a horrible success rate, especially in Vegas. If my success rate was that poor, I wouldn’t even expect you to read this. But you should read this because my success rate is over 100%. Beyond Undefeated. Beyond Undefeated is when you have swooped more girls than you have spent nights in a city. There are certain does and don’ts you must apply if you want to be successful. Here are some Impeccable Techniques:


Avoid Local Mystery Suite Parties


These sound good on Paper, especially when pitched to you by some 21 year old Maybelline Queen Exotic Dancer. She will tell you something like “lets go up to this suite party on the 56th floor of the Bellagio”. Yeah sounds good on paper. The reality is that you will have to mix with Local Vegas Guy (And I don’t mean Alain Ducasse’s Mix or Mix Lounge in THE HOTEL either). Avoid local Vegas guy at all costs. Especially local vegas promoter guy. These guys are really fronters, scumbags and losers. Although these guys front like they have connections in Vegas, they usually just know other low-end bottom feeder types. The reason why these guys are so bad, I think, (And I don’t give them much thought) is because Vegas is an expensive place, (for most, for me its cheap) champagne drinking limo riding and all that. Local Vegas Promoter guy has to compete with that every night or else he gets mopped up by tourist guy. And I am not a mathmetician but when local vegas promoter guy is pulling down ,500 a year, the life style just doesn’t add up. Plus he has to go to the salon to get his hair styled and needs to buy tons of cool T-shirts with writing on them to keep up the “cool, party guy act”. And as we know, those 3rd World Sweatshop made T-shirt aren’t cheap. So what Vegas Guy has to do is cut corners. Rip people off. Not to mention a rampant drug problem. This is all a recipe for disaster. Personally, I am more interested in Galatoire’s recipe for Gumbo or Turtle Soup. It’s important to have a good Running Partner with you in these situations, that way you can kick up your Gucci Loafers, spark up a smoke with a vintage Dunhill lighter, finish off your Goose and Soda, and check the time with a Vintage 1960′s Breitling Watch (to see if your in the kill zone for Gentleman’s Clubs) while your Running Partner ads a couple of KO’s to his record “on the cobbles”.


Utilize the “Ultra-Lounges”


In Vegas they call Lounges “Ultra-Lounges”. If you ask me, it sounds pretty gay. Regardless, they are functional spots to use as early night meeting points. They are real easy to get into and are easy to find someone. Also a good place to get back up leads as fly girls usually are to be found in Ultra-Lounges.


Don’t get blinded by the Light (and I don’t mean Andrew Sasson’s Club Light either)


Avoid going to Gentlemans Club’s on Friday and Saturday Night at 11 or 12. Even when you are Untouchable like Eliot Ness. I know you got the Custom-Made suit on, hand made shoes from England, and got on the best tie in your collection. Your Bullet-proof, Hard to Kill like Steven Segal. Still, avoid the the Gentlemans club early. You Will get “Pole-Axed”, “Jelly-Fished” and/or “Blinded out”. You don’t have to be an expert in Econometric Modeling to know that Gentleman’s Clubs are all about supply and demand. When there are more girls than guys in Gentleman’s Clubs its all systems go. When there are more guys than girls in a Gentleman’s Club the system is clogged. But if your dressed sharp like a porcupine in a Custom Suit by Duncan Quinn with side vents, blood red shirt by Dior Homme with silver and black cufflinks, no tie, pocket square by Thom Browne, Custom shoes by John Lobb on St. James Street or Edward Green on Jermyn Street in exotic skins (refined decadence) you have a more than decent shot at it.


Oysters


We have mentioned this before. But don’t start any night in Vegas without Oysters. A good portfolio would be some Cotuit Oysters (Massachusetts), Netarts Bay (Oregon), and some Winterpoints (Maine). (Skip the Hamma Hamma Oysters (Washington) and the Kumamoto (Oregon), they suck.) Caviar and Florida Stone Crabs also make for a nice well rounded opening salvo. RM Mooney, Daniel Boulud’s Daniel, Alain Ducasse’s Mix, even Aquanox are all worth an early stop by.


Girls in Street Clothes


Want to pull Fly Girls out of a Gentleman’s Club in less time than it takes you to finish two Goose and Sodas? (And I drink fast). Here is how you do it: Target Girls in street clothes. They are already on their way out the spot, so half the battle is already won. Last time in Vegas I walked in (dressed impeccably of course) to a great Gentleman’s Club and 17 minutes later left with three Fly girls, destination: my suite at Wynn Resorts (in the girls defense, the spot was filled with Regular Guy, and I was wearing an Ridiculous suit by Paul Smith, my track record is flawless, and my skin had a healthy flush from the spa earlier in the day, so I could hardly blame them for wanting to leave with me). Not bad for a Wednesday night.


Side Note:


Avoid Girls with “Property of (insert Biker Gang)” Tattoos. Weather it be The Hells Angels, The Banditos, The Pagans, The Rock Machine (now merged with The Banditos), The Outlaws or The Henchmen. In fact, it’s better to avoid Gentleman’s Clubs with Biker Gangs in general. Unless of course you are trying to find distribution for a large quantity on Crystal Meth, in that case, you found the right guys. You don’t want to get in the Crossfire of a Gang War and find out how good you are at ducking wrenches. I remember one time years back in Los Angeles, I was with a local beautiful Hollywood, prototype SuicideGirl/ Nightlife Princess and the Motorcycle Club in attendance didn’t take too kindly to me. Not sure why. But I do know, if it wasn’t for my Desert Eag and a cab with perfect timing I might have not had a Magical Night.


James “Lights Out” Toney


Partying in Las Vegas, even with Entering The Dragon, will get you in pretty bad physical shape over a few day period. Don’t be Vain about it or let it get you down. James “Lights Out” Toney, became one of the Greatest Boxers of his Generation and he did it not by being in great shape. He has always said, “Boxing is not a Bodybuilding Competition” (you remember a “chubby” Tim Witherspoon knocking out the Adonis Frank Bruno for the Heavyweight title, right?). Well, “Las Vegas is not a Bodybuilding Competition either”. Vegas is a GAME competition. (Well, maybe that Rehab Sunday pool party at the Hard Rock is a Bodybuilding Competition, but I have never been. The last place I want to be in Vegas in the summer time is at the Hard Rock pool with a bunch of personal trainer Guys from Arizona with Tribal Tattoos.) James Toney made it happen by being Tough, having tons of Heart, an Iron Chin, superb Counter Punching, a will to win, and lets face it: Impeccable Technique. Be a James Toney.


The Vegas Dance


No this isn’t some dance like The BankHead Bounce, The Harlem Shake, The Young Joc Motorcycle Dance, The Patty Duke, the Wrench or the Tango. Or even dope Breakdance moves like The Turtle, The Baby, Top Rock, Brooklyn Flare, Freezes, Windmills, Suicides (And I don’t mean SuicideGirls either) Headspins or Crazy Legs ill backspin in “Beat Street”. If you are like me, come 3am in Vegas, you will have plenty of options for Girls. Especially, if you follow The Blueprint for a Perfect Night in Vegas. Hold out for your best option. The best part about Vegas is that you have more time if you need it. Behind on the Score Cards after Twelve Rounds? Well, the great thing in Vegas is there is a Round 13. Hell, in Vegas you have as many rounds as you need to win the fight! No need to get jumpy and call it a night with the Ex-Sorority Girl in town from Ohio for a Bachelorette party who gave you her number. Hold out for something with some punch to it. For instance:


Girl Plus Friend


This is one of the most important techniques to Being Beyond Undefeated. It is a high risk move. But without Risk there cannot be Reward. To be a Top G, Top Pedigree, you need to embrace Risk. That’s why I trade Futures instead of Options. Unlimited Downside, but Unlimited Upside potential as well. So you have been stick and moving all night like Zab Judah, and you got a Fly Girl meeting you back at the Parasol Up bar ready to Kostya Tszyu her. Tell her to bring a Girlfriend. Leverage your position. Dame Sizzler style. When you get back to your Suite, have an In-Room Gymnastics Competition. Remember to Score the Girls on difficulty, form, originality AND artistry. Make sure you get a couple of Nadia Comaneci’s……. The Rest is Up to You……..
